The Carlsbad theme park is starting work on its first Lego reproduction of San Diego — from the Coronado bridge to whatever its fans think is most deserving

Spend a day at Legoland and you can see plenty of miniaturized U.S. landmarks — from Central Park in New York City to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Nowhere to be found, though, is a single San Diego icon.

That’s about to change. Come next spring, the Carlsbad theme park will devote a whole new area of Miniland U.S.A. to San Diego, and it’s looking for some advice on just what to feature. Balboa Park maybe? The U.S.S. Midway or Oceanside pier? Or what about the Cabrillo monument?

Everything’s on the table as Legoland solicits suggestions via social media for what will be the newest addition to Miniland USA where Lego replicas of Las Vegas, New York, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. are on display. The San Diego version, which will occupy 3,200 square feet, will take the place of the New Orleans area.ADVERTISING

“San Diego is one of America’s most beautiful destinations filled with incredible architecture, landscapes and history — making it an obvious choice when selecting the next city to add to Miniland USA,” said Legoland California President Kurt Stocks.

The park has taken to Instagram to solicit suggestions from interested fans, asking the question: “Which San Diego landmarks should be featured in LEGO brick form. Cast your ballot on our Instagram story polls throughout the next week.”

The park’s master model builders already are hard at work exploring some favorites of their own, including the Coronado bridge, Gaslamp Quarter, the Rady Shell at Jacobs Park and the Hotel Del Coronado.

“It’s not just about downtown or Coronado,” said Legoland California spokesman Jake Gonzalez. “You have the Del Mar Racetrack, for example, all these really cool spots. So we’re asking guests to go onto our Instagram and offer suggestions. Everybody has their own interpretation of what they think of for San Diego. It might be the big red chair in Little Italy. It’s a great way for us to show our locals and out-of-towners how beautiful San Diego is.”

Legoland will be taking suggestions through the end of the year, but more immediately, people can leave a comment on the park’s Instagram post or contribute to its Instagram story poll that will run next week. Among the suggestions received so far: the south Mission Beach lifeguard station, Salk Institute, USS Midway, the San Diego Zoo and the sea lions at La Jolla Cove.

One Instagram post raised the obvious question: “It’s about time. I always thought San Diego was strangely missing from Legoland California’s Miniland.”
